Steven Spielberg’s and Tom Hanks’ rightfully acclaimed HBO series (also shown on the BBC) Band of Brothers is an excellent and important piece of television, and here it gets a welcome Blu-Ray high-definition release.

Band of Brothers is based on the books of the same name by Stephen Ambrose, who recounted the real life experiences of the veterans of Easy Company, a parachute regiment dropped into Nazi-occupied France, who witnessed and participated in some of the major engagements of the mission to liberate Europe during World War II. From training, through the horrors of the siege of Bastogne, to the uncovering of Hitler’s opulent holiday chalet (the Eagle’s Nest), we follow the men of Easy Company as they increasingly come to rely on and fight for each other in the midst of hugely significant historical events.

Overall, this is great drama. Its honestly and proficiently acted by the likes of Damian Lewis, Ron Livingston and Donnie Wahlberg, and the characterisation and camaraderie of and between the men, of course based on the experiences of real veterans, is what really grips you to the series. You care about what happens to all of them. However, the attention to detail, historical accuracy and pull-no-punches approach to the violence, injury and death involved in the battles means this is more than a dramatic television series, but an important and truthful depiction of a part of our recent history that should not be forgotten, and a tribute to the men who were caught up in it and helped shape it.

This Blu-Ray edition of Band of Brothers of course highlights the wonderful cinematography of the series better than ever before, and also contains documentaries, interviews and behind-the-scenes clips, which take you deeper into both the creative process of the show, and the events that inspired it.
